psychology Flashcards
what is a strength and weakness of using correlations in a study
+ initial relationship can be discovered which might not have been realised prior as correlations can lead to new variable relationships
- only indicate a relationship between 2 variables there is no cause and effect identified as there is no Iv or Dv
what are the ethical issues with aschs study? would it be considered ethical now?
- use of decpetion, pp did not know the true aim of the study so could not give informed consent
- however, the guideline say the use of deception is alright when it would affect the research. Asch study , deception was necessary for conducting the study as if pp new the true aim they would not conform as expected
- lack of protection from harm, being the only one to perceive the lines differently caused moral strain, and distressed most pp. in interviews after, they reported feeling anxious and a fear of rejection
- for his study to be ethical now, he would have to make it clear they could withdraw themselves and their data at any time
what is social loafing
- when individuals put in less effort into completing a task when they are part of a group compared to when working alone
- when working in a group, diffusion of responsibility occurs as individuals do not need to work as hard
how does culture affect obedience
the culture you live in sets beliefs and expectations of your society. obedience to authority figures is a strong social norm in most cultures
collectivist cultures place greater importance on authority than individualistic which promotes freedom
what is the cost of helping
weighing up the cost and rewards of helping a person
- people may decide its too costly to help
- cost could be low so reward for helping is not felling guilty etc
EG you are running to catch a train, someone falls over but if you help them you will miss your train. the cost of missing your train is too great.
