emotional avoidance - use of drugs or alcohol
what is interpersonal therapy ?
involves taking on sick role and focusing on a particular area each session in order to deal with that specific interpersonal issue
what are the strengths of IPT ?
good evidence
no formal homework
can continue to practise skills beyond therapy duration
what are the limitations of IPT ?
requires degree of reflection
if poor social network then limited effectiveness
what are the principles of motivational interviewing ?
express empathy
avoid argument
support self-efficacy - patient sets agenda
what are the stages of change ?
pre-contemplation - denial, here if needed
contemplation - ambivalence - info + risk screening
planning/determination - I have a problem options for change- build confidence and motivation
action - doing it - prevent relapse, maintain goals
maintenance - coping strategy, weak points
