analgesia drowsiness and sleep euphoria respiratory depression cough reflex depression decreased sympathetic outflow lower temp
what are symptoms of opiate overdose ?
respiratory arrest with pulse pinpoint, unresponsive pupils snoring giving way to shallow respiration bradycardia and hypotension varying degree of reduced consciousness
what are side effects of opiates ?
first time - nausea/vomiting, headache
medium term - phlebitis, anorexia, constipation
long term - tolerance, withdrawal, social and health problems
what are symptoms of opiate withdrawal ?
craving insomnia yawning muscle pain and cramp increased salivary, nasal and lacrimal secretion dilated pupils piloerection
what are effects of MDMA ?
euphoria followed by calm
increased sociability
inability to distinguish what is and isn’t desirable
what are side effects of MDMA ?
nausea and dry mouth
increased blood pressure and temperature
anxiety and panic
psychosis
what are effects of cannabis ?
relaxing euphoriant
increase sociability, hilarity
increase appetite
change in time perception
what are adverse effect of cannabis ?
anxiety
panic
persecutory ideation
hallucinatory activity
exacerbation of mental illness
what are steroid side effects ?
skin - acne, stretch marks, baldness feminisation in males virilisation in women hypercholesterol + high BP growth defects liver disease roid rage, hypomania depression and suicidality
