what is psychological formulation?
a method used to assess an offender after their crime has taken place to see what could of caused them to commit the crime and what can be done to reduce the risk of recidivism
what does it involve ?
forensic psychologist meeting with offender and discussing the behaviour and life in detail and also carry out a functional analysis which looks at what the function of the behaviour was.
what are the main purposes?
to see what treatment and rehabilitation programme would be most effective/suitable and also to asses the risk of the re offending again, it can be used it court as evidence
what factors does it look at it which could effect an offenders life?
core beliefs, triggers, thoughts, behaviours, feelings and physical symptoms relating to offence.
what theories (in psychology) does it consider?
cognitive, psychodynamic and behavioural.)
what do the hcpc and bps want?
more guidence on how to perform the pf in a more reliable way.
why could it be better than a diagnosis?
when the treatment is unclear , if the offender presents complex problems and if there is not a lot known about these problems.
early experiences?
bullied from a young age, maybe laughed at , sexual abuse
core beliefs?
“if you have a problem fight it out” “dont let people take advantage” which is what an offender believes to be right.
