howells et al Flashcards
Aim:
to investigate whether anger management is more effective than no treatment at all in treating offenders.
sample:
18-62 yo, males, from south &western Australia, drawn from referrals in prison, with a range of ethnic backgrounds.
how may completed the AM
73%
how many completed one
20%
how many had more than one
4%
how many have attempted but not completed
3%
what did that anger management condition entail
10 sessions lasting 2 hours by a trained facilitator, the AM was based on the principles made by Novaco framework - they focused on structured exercises, e.g dealing provocations and identifying what they are.
did control and experimental take part in pre/post treatment follow up?
Yes. all ptps had to take part in pre and post treatment questions and follow up questions,
what happened at the end of every session?
the trained facilitator went through and checklist with offender checking the integrity of the course.
what did the correctional officers do for each participant?
CO ‘s and one other member of staff completed the staff rating scale for aggression of each offender.
what measures were used to asses offenders?
speilsberger state trait anger expression inventory (STAXI) (measures trait anxiety)
nocavo anger scale (NAS-PI) - intensity of anger.
MOAS (modified overt anger scale)
different types of agression
WAKS (watt anger knowledge) - knowledge of techniques
results:
little improvement between the mean scores of both pre-post treatment.
for example using the state and trait anger expression inventory the scores for experiment = (pre treatment)
control = 0.5 + improvement
experimental = 1.5 + improvement
(post treatment)
c = 23.0
e= 22.2
generalisability
used a large group of ptps, diverse in ethnicity. just males so doesn’t explain why females offend.
reliability
inter-rater reliability = rating offenders with co’s and one other member of staff.
using standardised measures.
validity
insignificant results.
