Psychodynamic Theory
how mental and physical symptoms can be caused by psycological factors/unconscious
Preconscious
not currently thinking about something, but can easily be recalled to memory
Unconscious
memories, feeling, etc hidden from awareness because they feel unacceptable without knowing
Ego Defense Mechanisms
ways to protect the individual from internal and external unpleasantness
Denial
refuse to believe things
Displacement
taking anger out on someone or something that wasn’t the cause of the anger
Projection
accussing people of doing something even though there doing the same thing; hypocrite
Rationalization
self-justifying explanation in place of the real one
Reaction Formation
acting opposite of what you feel
Regression
going back in time, not acting your age
Repression
pushing hurtful memories out of awareness
Sublimation
channel feelings into healthy outlet
Projective tests
exposed to debateable prompts, designed to reveal inner dynamics
Humanistic theory
people are good and constructive, the tendency toward self-actualization is inherent, given proper environment, human beings will develop to maximum potential
Unconditional Regard
acknowledging feelings, even problems, without passing judgement; honoring do devaluing
Self-Actualization
fulfilling one’s potential
