PSYCHODYNAMIC APPROACH Flashcards
1
Q
FIXATION
A
- during oral stage of the psychosexual stages the libido recipes satisfaction from stimulation of course the lips and mouth such as through breastfeeding
- too much or too little stimulation can lead to fixation
- Freud suggests that individuals with schizophrenia become fixated in the first one to two months of the oral stage development
2
Q
REGRESSION
A
- as an adult most people satisfy oral desires through kissing chewing gum or smoking
- however an adult under a lot of stress they may regress back to the oral stage
- this is an ego defence mechanism where the ego retreats back to an earlier stage specifically for schizo the oral stage
- can be temporary or long term

Q
LOSING TOUCH WITH REALITY
A
- during the oral stage the ego is not well developed
- it’s role is to control the id and balance ids demands with moral limitations of the superego
- however by regressing back to a time where the ego did not really exist means the id may not be impended
- symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions represent unchecked activities of the Id
- a person cannot distinguish between reality and their desires and wishes
- state of a newborn infant and typed as narcissism
- compared to well adjusted adults who have well-developed egos which sets limits on fantasy

Q
SCHIZOPHRENOGENIC MOTHER
A
- psychodynamic theorists suggest mother child relationship is a crucial factor in development of schizophrenia
- Frieda Fromm reichmann states that schizos are distrustful and resentful due to sever early warp and rejection encountered in important people in infancy mainly in schizophrenogenic mother
- suggets mothers of schizos are over protective and controlling but also rejecting and distant
- over protection stifles child’s emotional development but distances deprives child of personal security leaving an individual vulnerable when faced with stress
