DOUBLE BIND
A
- entails children being punished for doing what was told such as giving hug then being pushed away and then punished again for not being given a reason why
- suggets children will become confused and loose their grip on reality
- negative symptoms and social withdrawal and flat affect may be an appropriate and logical response to double bind situations
- Bateson suggested this and was the first to look at family dynamic
- stated that if children received mixed signals they learn they cannot trust the messages received from others resulting in them not trusting their own feelings and perceptions
