DOUBLE BIND

A
  • entails children being punished for doing what was told such as giving hug then being pushed away and then punished again for not being given a reason why
  • suggets children will become confused and loose their grip on reality
  • negative symptoms and social withdrawal and flat affect may be an appropriate and logical response to double bind situations
  • Bateson suggested this and was the first to look at family dynamic
  • stated that if children received mixed signals they learn they cannot trust the messages received from others resulting in them not trusting their own feelings and perceptions

  • those recovering from schiz and discharged from hospital were followed over a 9 month period interviews with family determined level of expressed emotion
