SOCIOCULTURAL FACTORS Flashcards
1
Q
URBANICITY
A
- more schizos on urban areas compared to rural
- Farris and Dunham reported more schizos in densely populated areas of Chicago with less populated outskirts of the city
- Jim van os et al found higher incidence of schizos born and raised in urban areas (0.5%)
- this could be due to the environmental features of urban life
- Krabbendam and Jim van os identified factors such as greater socioeconomic adversity for urban dwellers as well as pollution over crowding drug abuse and exposure to toxins
- could be greater social stress that occurs from living in these areas
2
Q
SOCIAL ISOLATION
A
- schizos report solitary backgrounds with fewer friends or more limited social network other individuals
- faris suggested schizos find contact with others stressful so they withdraw so urbanicity and overcrowding can lead to isolation
- this isolation cuts individual off from feedback about what behaviours or thoughts are appropriate and therefore behave strangely
- Jones et al reported findings of a longitudinal study of 5362 people born in a specific week in March 1946
- childhood data was gathered prospectively and between 16-43 30 cases of schiz were diagnosed
- found those diagnosed were more likely to show solitary play at 4-6 y/o and at 13 less likely to rate themselves as socially confident suggesting isolation starts early

Q
ETHNICITY AND DISCRIMINATION
A
- statistics show higher than expected numbers of Afro-Caribbean descent diagnosed with schiz
- this group also find themselves being cumpolsorily admitted to psychiatric hospitals (ineichen)
- mahy et al found this cannot be genetic because increases risk is not found in studies conducted in the Caribbean therefore stress of migration to another culture may explain this
- however these rates were also found in migrants children in uk (Harrison et al)
- Therefore discrimination may lead to higher incidence
