Psychodynamic Approach Flashcards
Psychodynamic approach
Describes the different forces (mostly unconscious) that operate on the mind and human behaviour/experience.
The unconscious
The part of the mind that we are unaware of but can direct most of our behaviour.
Id
Unconscious. Selfish instincts.
Ego
Reality check balances the conflicting id and superego
Superego
How we ought to be, very moral which represents the ideal self.
Defence mechanisms
Unconscious strategies that the ego uses to manage the conflict between the id and superego.
Psychosexual stages
Freud. 5 stages all children go through. If their is a specific conflict in that stage, it will determine future development.
The role of the unconscious
Contains disturbing memories that have been repressed. Biological drives/instincts on behaviour.
Preconscious
Dreams, slips of the tongue. Eg calling a teacher mum.
Psychosexual stages
Oral Anal Phallic Latency Genital If they get stuck in one stage, they carry certain behaviours into adult life.
