Behavior therapy

A subclass of cognitive behavioral therapy for phobias that replaces a fear response with relaxation resonses
Aversion therapy
A subclass of behavioral therapy that teaches people to associate a stimulus that is desirable with an unpleasant stimulus (alcoholics who take disulfiram so they get sick when they drink)
Psychodynamic therapy
One of the oldest modern therapies based on idea that patient has unresolved conflicts in childhood creating an underlying problem and personality is shaped by different conflicts at different times in childhood, patients develop insight on the influence of the past on present behavior and uncover unconscious patterns of interpersonal relationships
Psychotherapy timeline
Much longer, usually 2 years involving long term many sessions to uncover, a therapeutic alliance and conversation between patient and therapist
Humanistic/existential therapy
Emphasis on understanding the human experience and focus on patient rather than the symptoms based on the philosophy that humans are inherently good (humanistic) and must have meaning (existential), encourages clients to take ownership of their lives, is suited particularly among suicidal patients
Multicultural therapy
A therapy that addresses concerns of those who are of minority status in some regard
