Benzodiazepine
Valium actions?
Crosses the blood-brain barrier in the cerebral motor cortex to suppress seizure activity and cause CNS slowing. It will stop active seizure, but it does not prevent them. Does not have any analgesic properties.
Valium onset/duration?
IV: 1-5 min
IM: 15-30 min
IV/IM: 15-60 min
Valium indications?
acute anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, cocaine overdose, seizures, status epilepticus, sedation prior to cardioversion or transcutaneous pacing
Valium contraindications?
CNS depressant, hypotension, respiratory depression, hypersensitivity, alcohol intoxication
Valium side effects?
Respiratory depression, hypertension, confusion, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, blurred vision
Valium route of administration?
IVP (slow)
Valium adult dose for seizures?
5mg over 2 min IV every 5-10 min as needed
(max dose of 30mg) or 10mg IM
Valium adult dose for cardioversion or transcutaneous pacing?
5-15mg IV, 5-10 min before procedure
Valium peds dose for 30 days-5 years old?
0.2-0.5mg slow IV every 2-5 min
max dose of 5 mg
Valium peds dose for >5 years old?
1mg IV every 2-5 min
max dose of 10mg
Valium supply?
5mg/mL or 10mg/2mL vials
Valium special considerations?
Reduce dose by 50% in geriatric population.
Flumazenil (Romazicon) is the anti-dose

Haldol classification?
Antipsychotic
Haldol actions?
Blocks the dopamine receptors in the brain that are responsible for mood and behavior
Haldol onset/duration?
IM: 30-60 min / 12-24 hours
Haldol indications?
Acute psychotic episodes, sedation of agitated patient
Haldol contraindications?
CNS depression, coma, hypersensitivity, pregnancy, Parkinson’s disease
