Thought disorder
- Disordered thinking as evidenced by disorganized speech
- Hearing voices, hallucinations or paranoia
Magical thinking
- Belief that ones thoughts have ability to cause actions that defy normal laws of cause and effect
Neologism
Newly invented, nonsensical word
Word salad
Use of words haphazardly, without logical structure or meaning
Circumstantiality
- Disturbance of associative thought into unnecessary details and inappropriate thoughts before ultimately communicating central idea
Tangentiality
- Lack of observance to main subject of discourse
- Deviation from topic
Perseveration
- Abnormal, compulsive and inappropriate repetition of words
Loosening of association
- Frequent changing of subject and content that is not related to subject matter
Derailment
- Sequence of unrelated or remotely related ideas
- Frame of reference changes from one sentence to next
Flight of ideas
- Continuous but fragmented use of language
- Train of thought followable but direction changes by chance stimuli from envt
- Psychosis and mania
Clanging
- Association of words characterized by rhyming, sound rather than logic
Blocking
Sudden break in free association as a defense against unpleasant ideas
Glossolalia
- Speaking in tougues
- Sx of brain disease
Poverty of content
- Speech that lacks meaning, quantity is greater than necessary for message conveyed
Delusion
- Fixed, false belief that is not grounded in reality
- Remains despite contradicted
Paranoid delusion
- Fixed, false belief that one is being harmed or persecuted by a person or group of people
Delusion of persecution
Delusion that others are out to embarrass and inflict suffering on you
Delusion of grandeur
- Fixed, false belief that one posses superior qualities
- Great but unrecognized talent or insight
Thought withdrawal
Delusion that someone or something is removing thoughts from ones mind
