psych of perception chapter 6 Flashcards
overt attention
occurs when you move your eyes from one place to another, involves looking directly at the attented object
covert attention
occurs when you shift attention without moving your eyes, refers to attention without looking
cocktail party effect
ability to focus on one stimulus while filtering out other stimuli
spatial attention
attention to specific locations
illusory conjunctions
features that should be associated with an object become incorrectly associated with another
feature integration theory
preattentive stage (features are separated)
focused attention stage (features are combined)
visual search
simple feature pop-up search
conjunction search
three type of signals for perceiving movement of something in the visual field
MS (motor signal) - tension of muscles surrounding the eyes
CDS (corollary discharge signal)
IDS (image displacment signal) - if retinal movement is present
if comparator receives both CDS and IDS
movement is not perceived (scanning a still image)
if comparator receives either CDS or IDS
movement is perceived (tracking a flying bird)
visual salience
areas of stimuli that attract attention due to their properties (colour, contrast, movement, orientation)
inattentional blindness
subjects can be unaware of clearly visible stimuli if they aren’t directing their attention to them
change blindness
when shown a picture with and without mising elemnet in an alterating fashion it is hard to detect the change cause in nature real objects change with some type of movement
disorders of attention
spatial neglect (damage to one of brain hemispheres), extinction (brain damage where there is lack of awareness in one side of the visual field) , preattentive processing (body’s processing of sensory information (ambient temperature, light levels, etc.) that occurs before the conscious mind starts to pay attention to any specific objects in its vicinity)
