Psych exam 3 Pt. 1 Flashcards
What does Freud’s theory consist of?
It consists of 3 behavioral structures that are developed through five stages
What are the 3 personality structures and what do they mean
ID: a person’s drives, such as sexual and hunger
Ego: One ability to deal with those urges in a real-world sense
Superego: one ability to tell right from wrong
What are the five stages that build these personality structures
oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latency period, and the genetic stage
What is the oral stage?
The oral stage occurs between 0-12 months and it is when hunger is shown due to the urge to feed this is how we see the showing of the ID
When is the ego developed?
At 12 months old
What is the anal stage?
This stage is like the oral stage, but instead occurs between 1-3 years of age, it gets its urge through the anus by potty training. It is in this stage that we start to see conflict between parent and child
What is the phallic stage?
This stage occurs between 3 and 6 years of age and this is when we see a child show attraction to the opposite sex parent, it is resolved by the identification to the same sex parent and this is when we see the super ego because they can determine it is wrong to like the same sex parent
What is the Latency stage?
This stage occurs from 6-12 years of age, and it is when they can suppress their sexual urges and channel them into academic, social, and athletic skills.
What is the genital stage
This stage occurs from 12 years and beyond puberty strikes and sexual urges return and evolves the ego
What can go wrong with Freud Threoy
Fixation, Regression, and Repression
Why did Freud’s Theory come out of favor?
It came out of favor due to the inability to test tenants
What is Eriksons Theory?
He believes that there are eight stages, and you must successfully complete one stage to move on to the next one. Each stage involves a crisis that you must overcome.
What is stage one: basic trust vs mistrust?
this occurs between 0-1 years and it is important for trust for normal development
What is stage 2: Autonomy vs shame and doubt
occurs from 1 year to 3 and a half
What is stage three: initiative vs guilt
4-6 years, learning to do things that you are supposed to do such as make your bed and talk to your peers
