Psych Ch. 6 Flashcards
Memory
Is the ability to store and retrieve information overtime
You cant consider your memory function without looking at these 2 factors
Attention and interest
levels of processing approach
as memory depends on the degree or depth of mental processing that occurs when material is initially encountered
What are the 3 types of judgment
Sematic judgment, Rhyme judgement, and visual judgment
Elaborative Rehearsal
Connect new information in already encoded information
Maintenance rehearsal
Repeating information encoded over to minimize distractions and keep information in short term memory
Chunking
Grouping things together
What is the tradition 3-stage memory model
Sensory model: - everything that we hear/see through sensory input Short-term memory: - Can hold 5-9 items for 30 seconds without practicing - unrehearsed information is lost Long term Memory: - A limitless capacity - some information lost overtime
Working memory
Your ability to hold and manipulate information
Ex: Mental math, taking notes
Explicit
Memory with conscious recall
Implicit
Memory without conscious recall
Somatic memory
Your general knowledge
Episodic memory
Memories of personal experience
Procedural memory
Like brushing your teeth, driving your car, writing
Emotional conditioning
Ex: phobias
Herman Ebbinghaus
developed the forgetting curve
- forgetting usually occurs 1 hour after happening
- relearning is easier
- distributive practice works better than mass practice
Decay theory
that memory gets worse overtime
interference theory
one memory competes with another memory
Motivating theory
things that we are motivated to forget because they are embarrassing, painful, threatening, unpleasant
Encoding failure
information in short-term memory is not included into long-term memory
Retrieval Failure
The memory is there, but momentarily inacessable
retroactive interference
when new information interferes with old information
Proactive interference
when old memories interfere with new memories
Dementia
a broad term that refers to a number of neurodegenerative diseases that have problems with memory
