Psych Ch. 3 Flashcards
Neuron
Cells in the nervous stem that communicate with each other to perform information-processing tasks
Neurotransmitters
A chemical that carries, boosts, and balances signals between neurons
Nervous System CNS
brain, spinal cord, nerves
Spinal Cord
In charge of our reflexes
Reflexes
Innate responses to environmental factors
Brain
that part of the central nervous system that includes all the higher nervous centers
Contralateralization
left hemisphere controls right side of body, right hemisphere controls left side of body
Localization of function in the brain
specific parts of the brain serve specific functions in the production of mental experience and behavior
Neuroplacisity
The idea that your neurons in the brain are “plastic”, they can regrow after stimulation. Regrow connection between neurons
Hindbrain
contains cerebellum, pons, medulla
Midbrain
contains Tectum and Tegmentum. Plays a role in Wakefulness and sleep regulation
Forebrain
Contains Cortex and Subcortex
limbic system
Contains Hypothalamus , Amygdala, and hippocampus
Hypothalamus
Plays a role in homeostatic activity
Hippocampus
Limbic system- Plays role in memory functions
