DSM-5
Organization that describes psychological disorders
Psychological disorder
A behavior that meets the “4 D’s”:
- Deviance
- Distress
- Dysfunctional
- Danger
Diagnosis
Identify symptoms to distinguish one syndrome from another
Medical model
mental disorders have physical causes and may be treated as medical problems
Generalized anxiety disorder
Characterized by pervasive worrying, anxious thought and feelings (including anxiety with no attachment), autonomic arousal, trembling, sweating, sleep distruption
Panic attack
episodes of intense dread, which include feelings of terror, chest pains, shortness of breath, dizziness, etc
Panic disorder
when anxiety about potential panic attacks causes significant distress and dysfunction
Phobic disorder
Marked by a persistent and excessive fear of specific objects or situations
Social phobia
Intense fear and discomfort in social situations
OCD
Characterized by repetitive intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and ritualistic behaviors (compulsions) to fend off those thoughts
PTSD
may develop after a terrifying ordeal that involved physical harm or the threat of physical harm. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, social withdrawal
Major depressive disorders
Patients must have either depressed mood or decreased interest, symptoms present on most days and for most of the day for at least 2 weeks
Bipolar disorder
Characterized by manic and depressive episodes
