Meta Communication
A
- behavior that regulates, alters, or qualifies an ongoing stream of communicative events
- relationship messages in what is being said
- communication about our communication
- ” I don’t like the way you’re talking to me”
ex: dog park
- big and small dog aren’t fighting by playing

- exaggerate style and attitude that is not a serious fight/issue
Examples:
- winking after statement = not serious
- roll eyes = express attitude of behav

A
- if it’s not someone you’re clsoe to, you’ll tap them on the back = quasi courtship ritual
- behav of hugging is somewhat like courtship
- shows friendship not intimacy

Criteria of Meta
A
- recognize shift in level or break in continuity
- you’re going too far
- let’s move on from small talk - immediate time frame
- what jut happened
- past/present/future - evolve attitude and standards about appropriate behavior
- someone in your space and telling them to back off
#1 RULE: - don't meta comm unless you want to inc involvement w/ person either +/-
