Psych 11/18 Flashcards
What are the 3 ways we choose strategies?
- social distance
- intimacy
- b/w speaker and hearer
- how well you know the person you’ll impose on - relative power
- status
- s & H
- same as you - cultural ranking of imposition
Postive politeness
- impose on another by communicating you’re similar = goals and values
- then you’ll be able to get away w/ asking something
- appear closer than you really are
Negative politeness
- about communicating distance
- rituals of respect/behavior/avoidance
- do least amount of face damage
Steps of negative politeness
- avoid making assumptions of others = hedges
ex: It seems nice to me - avoid coercing itgers
- express pessimisim that coersin will be able to help you
- if no = save face
- use subjunctive = conditional voice (would,could)
ex: you wouldn’t happen to have $1 I can borrow
3. communicate desire not to impose on other
ex: I’m sorry, but..this may be inappropriate but…
Combo effects of +/- face/politeness
- shifts of approach
- starts at one politeness to another because don’t know person well
ex: can I get you a drink?
no.
please, I insist.
Ok
Communication Theory
- creating meaning
2 differnt levels/tracks of communication theory
- report func
- cognitive
- info being conveyed
* decode = recieve and interperate what is said - command func
- not what I say, but how I say it
* encode = enact so it’s meaningful to others
Channels of communication

- what 2/+ do
What are the 2 types of transactions
a. standing feature
- relations
- what we infer in a relationship looking at one moment in time
b. dynamic feature
- interactions
- over time as evolve and change
Gestures
- some are intentional or not
- retrain = changes content and attitude
- intuitive
- just happens
- not direct
Gesture types:
1. Adaptors

Gesture types:
2. Emblems
- gestures that have content
- can replace words

Gesture types:
3. Illustrators
- hand movements that create emphsis and rhythm
