What are the symptoms of mania?
[DIG FAST] Distractibility. Irresponsibility. Grandiosity. Flight of ideas. Activity/Agitation. Sleep (decreased need for sleep). Talkativeness or pressured speech.
What is hypomania?
Same symptoms, less severe. Shorter duration. But two distinctions: symptoms have to be for 4 days, and that expansive mood does not cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning.
What are the symptoms of Bipolar I disorder?
1 maniac episode. No need for depression, but most patients get it later in life.
What are the symptoms of bipolar II disorder?
Hypomanic episodes and 1 episode of major depression.
What is the difference of physiopathological mechanism of depression vs mania?
Depression: Decreased dopamine, serotonin, NE. Mania: increased serotonin, NE.
What is Cyclothymic disorder?
Mild hypomani symptoms and mild depressive symptoms. Has to be at least for 2 years with periods of normal mood (up to 2 months).
What are the side effects of lithium?
Sedation and dizziness. Tremors. Sick sinus syndrome. Bradycardia. Heart block. Hypothyroidism. Goiter. Polyuria.
What are the features of Ebstein anomaly?
Tricuspid leaflets are displaced inferiorly into the right ventricle. Hypoplasia of the right ventricle. Tricuspid regurgitatioon or stenosis. Patent foramen ovale.
What is dissociative identity disorder?
More common in women and people who have been sexually abused. Patient has 2 or more distinctive personalities.
What is Depersonalization disorder (or derealization disorder)?
Patient constantly feels detached from his body and thoughts.
What medications are used in the treatment of bipolar disorder?
Lithium. Atypical antipsychotics (risperidone, aripiprazole, olanzapine). Seizure meds (lamotrigine, valporic acid, carbamazepine).
What is Mania?
A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood. Abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy. For this to be a true maniac episode, it has to last at least one week. For diagnosis, it required that it is severe enough to cause marked impairment in social or occupational function or hospitalization or psychotic features.
