What are the mature ego defense mechanisms?
Altruism. Humor. Sublimation. Suppression.
What is acting out?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is expression of unacceptable impulse/feeling through action.
What is Dissociation?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is detachment from reality.
What is Displacement?
An immature ego defense mechanism, Transferring avoided ideas and feelings to a neutral person or object (vs. projection). “Yell at kids because you boss yelled at you earlier in the day”
What is Fixation?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is when partially remaining at a childish level of development. “Interacting with your mother like if you were still a child rather than an adult”
What is Identification?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is when a person assimilates another person’s attribute. “More than just imitation”
What is Isolation?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is separation of feelings from threatening thoughts or events.
What is Projection?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is when a person reduces anxiety by taking unacceptable thoughts and believing that someone else has those thoughts.
What is rationalization?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is when convincing oneself that no wrong has been done.
What is reaction formation?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is when taking unacceptable thoughts/impulses and attempting to over-exaggerate the opposite thought/action. “Someone addicted to alcohol goes on a crusade to combat alcoholism to the detriment of never seeing her family and friends.”
What is Regression?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is when returning to an earlier stage of development rather than dealing with an unacceptable emotion or thought.
What is repression?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is an unconscious withholding of unacceptable feelings or memories.
What is splitting?
An immature ego defense mechanism, it is believing that a person/thing is either all good or all bad.
What is sublimation?
A mature ego defense mechanism, it is unacceptable impulses/feelings are consciously transformed into socially acceptable actions.
What is suppression?
A mature ego defense mechanism, it is a conscious and deliberate attempt to stop thinking about negative or stressful things/
What is the difference between suppression vs repression?
Suppresion is a mature defense mech that is a CONSCIOUS and deliberate attempt to stop thinking about something negative. Repression is an immature defense mech that is UNCONSCIOUS to forget about something negative.
