What are the treatments of panic disorder?
Cognitive behavioral therapy. SSRIs. TCAs. Benzodiazepines (acute attacks). Beta-blockers.
What is Social anxiety disorder? What is the treatment for it?
Exaggerated fear of embarrassment in social situations. Use SSRIs or beta-blockers.
What is agoraphobia?
Fear of open spaces or public situations.
What is the difference between obsession vs compulsion?
Obsession: Intrusive thought that can’t be controlled. Compulsion: Performance of a task to relieve the obsession.
What is the treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder?
SSRIs. Clomipramine.
What is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder?
Persistent re-experiencing of a previous traumatic event. Disturbance must last longer than a month; if less it is acute stress disorder or normal mourning.
What is Generalized anxiety disorder?
Uncontrollable anxiety and worry for at least 6 months.
What is Adjustment disorder?
Identifiable psychosocial stressor. Last less than six months after stressor is gone.
What is the treatment for Generalized anxiety disorder?
Benzodiazepines. SSRIs. SNRIs. Buspirone.
What is the mechanism of Buspirone and when is it used for?
Stimulates serotonin receptors. Only approved to be used for generalized anxiety disorder.
What is Munchausen syndrome?
Chronic factitious disorder with predominantly physical signs/symptoms.
What is Munchausen by proxy?
Factitious disorder imposed on another.
What is Somatic Symptom Disorder?
One symptom that causes distress; excessive anxiety and worry. Lasts for at least 6 months.
What is Illness anxiety disorder?
Called hypochondriasis in DSM IV, it is someone having anxiety that they have an illness when nothing is wrong.
What is Conversion disorder?
Motor or sensory symptoms: paralysis, blindness, mutism, pseudoseizures. Patient is aware but indifferent.
What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder?
Patient is very concerned about body image, more so than just vanity. They might have excessive grooming or repeatedly looking at the mirror.
A patient whom you wish to obtain an MRI says that he can’t due to his claustrophobia. What can you do To help him?
Give him a benzodiazepine.
A young woman that is anxious about receiving her first Pap smear is told to relax and to imagine going through the steps of the exam. What does this process exemplify?
Systematic desensitization.

Somatic symptoms disorder with predominant pain.
What somatoform disorder is present when patient with normal anatomy is convinced a part of their anatomy is abnormal?
Body dysmorphic disorder.
What somatoform disorder is present when unexplained loss of sensory or motor function (test and PE are negative)?
Conversion disorder.
What somatoform disorder is present when unwavering belief by the patient that she has a specific disease (despite medical reassurance)?
Illness anxiety disorder (used to be called hypochondriasis).
What somatoform disorder is present when unexplained complaint despite normal workup?
Somatic symptom disorder (somatization).
What is Panic disorder?
Lots of panic attacks. Anxiety. Palpitations. Chest pains. Abdominal distress. Fear of dying. Feeling of impending doom. Then you worry about future panic attacks.
