Pseudomonas aeruginosa & Bordetella pertussis Flashcards
What’s the gram rxn & morphology of pseudomonas?
Gram-negative(stained pinkish/red) bacillus shaped (Rods)
Are pseudomonas microbes motile?
Yes, they contain flagella that allow for motility
Where are these microbes found?
They are Free-living bacteria that are found out in the environment (I.e. soil & water)
What are some characteristics of pseudomonas?
Oxidase positive, catalase positive, produce a blue-green pigment, & are metabolically versatile (can grow in antiseptics)
Pseudomonas requires a weaken host meaning it is a______________ pathogen.
Opportunistic
Pseudomonas is resistant to what?
Many disinfectants & antibiotics
Why is it a common contaminant in a hospital?
Because it is an opportunistic pathogen and a hospital has many weaken host to infect
What are the virulence factors for this organism?
Degradation enzyme & endotoxin
What patients are at risk for this microbe?
Burn patients (especially 3rd degree burns), cystic fibrosis (lung infection), premature infants, & neonates
Can healthy people be at risk
Yes
How can we diagnose this microbe?
Has a distinctive smell, produces pigment, and by culturing this helps us identify the organism
What is the incubation period for this disease?
24-72 hours, pseudomonas dermatitis has an incubation of about 2 weeks
What is the mode of transmission?
This organism lives in the environment, it can be spread to people if they are exposed to water or soil that is contaminated
What is P.aeruginosa the leading cause of?
HAIs
What disease does P.aeruginosa cause?
HAIs, pneumonia, UTIs, and Sepsis
Name characteristics for Bordetella pertussis
- aerobic
- small
- gram negative
- bacilli (rod shape)
Virulence factor for B. pertussis?
- Endotoxin —> inflammation & septic shock
- has receptor to bind to dilated respiratory cells
What is the reservoir for Bordetella pertussis?
Infected humans (healthy adult carrier to children)
Mode of transmission for B. pertussis?
Direct contact w/ discharges from the respiratory mucus membranes
What disease does Bordetella pertussis cause?
Pertussis AKA whooping cough
How does whooping cough differ from adults & children ?
Adults have a chronic cough & children have acute respiratory disease
Is Bordetella pertussis highly communicable?
Yes, is can spread easily
What is the prevention for pertussis ?
DTaP vaccine
What are the complications for B. pertussis?
Hypoxia, apnea, pneumonia, seizures, encephalopathy (brain swelling) , & worst of all death
