Chapter 16: Innate Immunity Flashcards
What is the immune system?
The body’s defenses against a pathogen or any foreign particles
Describe innate immunity
Nonspecific defenses that are present at birth and provide a rapid response
Innate immunity involves what lines of defense?
First and second line of defenses
What are four primary barriers of the first line of defense?
Skin, mucus membranes, pH, lysozyme
What does Cilia do?
Sweeps out trapped microbes/particles that enter the body
What do goblets cells secrete?
Mucus
What does mucus do?
Trap microbes or large particles
What are chemical factors from our first line of defense?
PH and lysozyme
Give an example of how pH acts as a defense
The stomach is acidic and the acid on our stomach help to kill microbes or any organisms that enter the body
