How does acute Pseudogout present?
Monoarthropathy
Commonly knee, wrist or hip
Spontaneous
Self limiting
How does chronic Pseudogout present?
Destructive changes seen similar to OA
Can present as polyarthritis - aka Pseudo-rheumatoid
What is the pathophysiology of Pseudogout?
Accumulation of calcium pyrophosphase dihydrate crystals in joints and surrounding tissues causing inflammation
What are some of the risk factors for Pseudogout?
Increasing age OA DM Hypothyroidism Hyperparathyroidism Wilson's disease
What investigations can be done in a patient with suspected Pseudogout?
Polarised light microscopy - See positive rhomboid shaped crystals
X ray - May show chondrocalcinosis
What is Chondrocalcinosis?
Calcium deposited in soft tissues
What is the treatment for Pseudogout?
Analgesia
NSAIDs
Steroids
