What is Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP)?

A

Inflammation of small blood vessels causing increased permeability and leaking
Most commonly occurs in children - IgA nephropathy varient

What are the symptoms of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP)?

A
Commonly occurs after an URTI
A rash with numerous small bruises
Colicky abdominal pain
Arthralgia
Haematuria

What is the treatment of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP)?

A

usually resolves in 4-6 weeks without any lasting complications
Symptomatic relief eg NSAIDs
May need corticosteroids if severe

What is Goodpasture’s syndrome?

A

Anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies attack healthy collagen in the lungs and kidneys causing basement membrane breakdown and renal damage (Rapidly progressing glomerulonephritis)

A

Very rapidly progressing

Immunosuppresion eg prednisolone + plasmapheresis
