causes vasoconstriction in the nasal mucous membranes
what are the contraindication and precaution of pseudoephedrine?
caution with pregnancy and lactation
what are the adverse effects of pseudoephedrine?
related directly to CNS stimulation thus resulting in tension, anxiety, restlessness, tremor, insomnia, and weakness.
what are the drug interactions of pseudoephedrine?
MAOIs, guanethidine, methyodopa, or furazolidone may lead to increased HTN
what are the health status of pseudoephedrine?
assess medical Hx. caution of HTN, DM, BPH

what are the nursing Dx of pseudoephedrine?
risk for injury caused by visual sensory-perceptual alterations (hallucinations) r/t to drug-induced CNS effects
- desired outcome: the patient will be protected from injury related to drug use and will demonstrate safety procedures to use if these effects occur
ineffective tissue perfusion: cerebral or cardiopulmonary r/t sympathomimetic effects
- desired outcome: the pt will be monitored and dosage adjusted to minimize potential perfusion deficits or CNS effects
how do you maximize the therapeutic effects of pseudoephedrine?
encourage patient to use a humidifier, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid smoke-filled rooms
