Q

what are the environment do you asses with pseudoephedrine?

A

assess environment where drug will be given. may result in rebound congestion if nasal passages become congested once drug wear off and body compensates by vasodilation of nasal arterioles.

Q

what are the nursing Dx of pseudoephedrine?

A

risk for injury caused by visual sensory-perceptual alterations (hallucinations) r/t to drug-induced CNS effects
- desired outcome: the patient will be protected from injury related to drug use and will demonstrate safety procedures to use if these effects occur

ineffective tissue perfusion: cerebral or cardiopulmonary r/t sympathomimetic effects
- desired outcome: the pt will be monitored and dosage adjusted to minimize potential perfusion deficits or CNS effects

16
Q

how do you minimize the adverse effects of pseudoephedrine?

A

provide the pt with appropriate safety measures, side rails, if CNS effects are seen

17
Q

what are the patient and family education of pseudoephedrine?

A
  • explain to pts that the purspose of drug is to promote breathing and relieve congestion
  • caution patients to avoid using other OTC drugs since many already contain pseudoephedrine which many lead to OD
  • do not take longer than 4 days. if no results, check with physician
18
Q

what are the ongoing assessment and evaluation for pseudoephedrine?

A

monitor patients receiving pseudoephedrine for rebound congestion, sedation, dizziness, weakness, tremor, and urinary retention
