Advantages of Extraction at Prudhoe
- 41,000 jobs in Alaska rely on the oil industry
- Oil brings $20bn in income to Alaska - around half GDP.
- Schools, hospitals, roads, etc. have been improved in a previously inaccessible area.
- The US are more energy secure.
- Oil is reliable and cheaper than other energy resources.
Disadvantages of Extraction at Prudhoe
- Traditional lives of indigenous population is threatened.
- Possible oil spills - e.g. 2006.
- Trans - Alaskan pipeline affects caribou migration routes.
- Huge amounts of CO2 and pollutants are released.
- Marine habitats affected e.g. beluga whales
- Terrestial habitats have been affected e.g. musk- oxen

South West america, North west peru, Andes Mountain range, South of the equator.

Isolation - 2hrs from nearest town.
Impassible in winter,
Lack of infrastructure,
Poor housing quality,
lack of jobs - 50% live on less than $2/ day.
