Proximal GIT II - Salivary Glands Flashcards
types of salivary glands (3)
Parotid= anterior to ear, almost exclusively serous acini (in face, small duct // mucus not viable) SubMandibular= under mandible, 80% serous SubLingual= under tongue, almost all mucus acini
when is it salivary or pancreas glands
solid organ divided into lobes
- just serous acini= pancreatic islets > pancreas, none > parotid
- mixed serous and mucus= mostly serous > Submandi, mostly mucus > sublingual
what colour is serous acini usually
bright pink
when does parotid gland + duct go to
oral cavity to parotid papilla
diff b/w parotid and submandibular gland
o Mucus acini (pale staining)
o Mucus vs serous cells in acinus
• Colour > Stain different, mucus= pale + serous = darker
• Nucleus > central in serous, peripheral (on basement) in mucus
o Duct vs serous acini
• Duct= lumen
how to tell if sublingual gland
• Pale as mostly mucus gland
serous vs mucus
o Mucus = pale, secrete mucus + filled cells, found in sublingual in high proportion and submodular in 20%, peripheral nuclei
• Intercalated Vs striated
o i= round large nuclear, no foldings of basement membrane, thinner membrane
