Protozoa! Flashcards
name 6 characteristics of protozoa?
65,000 spieces, most non pathogenic+ free living in water complex life cycle most unicellular -> colonies rare locomotive structures very in shape typically inhibit water or soil
describe protozoa life cycle?
motile feeding stage-> TROPHOZOITE
dormant stage -> CYST
both sexual and asexual stages
most propragate by simple asexual division of trophozoite
many undergo formation of cyst
others have complex life cycles including both sexual and asexual reproduction.
describe what a flagella looks like?
looks like a tampon!
describe what cilia looks like?
a headgehog
describe what a pseudopod looks like?
a blob/ spilt paint
describe radiolarians?
ameoboid protozoa with silica based skeleton
found in see as part of zoo plankton
describe psudopods
false feet, temporary cell extensions- used for movement, gathering food and protection
how are pseudopods formed?
cell membrane pushed in one direction and cytoplasm flows into large bulge this allows movement – drags rest of cell behind it
what can pseudopod moments be?
lobular, blunt, branched, filamentous…. it constantly changes shape
describe ciliated protozoa
hair like structures help move, get food and sense environment
most non pathogenic
have 2 nuclei - macro and micro
Trophoziotes have cilia.
what do trophozoites have ? - - - - -
CILIA
what are the 2 nuclei for in cilia’s
one for everyday functions and one for reproduction
describe APICOMPLEXA
all parasitic
complex life cycles, many stages and hosts
produce SPAROZIOTES-> for transferring to new host
Trophioziotes move by gliding, flexior and are non motile
how do trophioziotes move?
gliding, flexion or are non motile
describe and name flagellated protozoa?
motility by flagella alone or by flagella and amoeboid motion
several parasites; Giardia Trichomonas Trypanasoma Leishmania
describe and name amoeboid protozoa?
amoeba–> psudopods
ENTRAMOEBA HISTOLYTICA–> iniciates dissentry,
carried by 10% of population
describe protozoa reproduction?
all asexual- binary fission
describe reproduction in cilliates?
sexual reproduction called conjugation takes place.
2 join and exchange genetic material
describe pathogenic protozoa
most not pathogens
some = animal parasites= travel by insect vectors
define zoonoses
when animals infect humans
describe Giardia Lambda
intestinal parasite 2 nuclei and sucking discs tear drop shape multiple flagella and internal filaments spread through contaminated water causes mucus filled faeces also called Hitch hikers diarrhoea
describe malaria
caused plasmodium species transmitted by female anopheles mosquito intracellular and extracellular stages complex life cycle intense cold feeling then dry sweat can cause anaemia complications include acute renal failure cerebral malaria liver damage
describe complications with malaria
acute renal failure,
cerebral malaria
liver damage
what causes malaria
plasmodium species, carried by female anopheles species
