protists and fungi Flashcards
why is the protist kingdom sometimes called the “ junk drawer” kingdom?
bc protists don’t fit anywhere else.
name some characteristics that all protists share.
all are eukaryotes.
they live in moist surroundings.
what are the 3 groups that scientists use to classify protists?
Animal-like
plant-like
and fungi-like
what are the 4 types of protozoans?
pseudopods
cilia
zooflagellates
sporozoans
how do the 4 types of protozoans move to get their food?
what are the characteristics of animal-like protists?
all are heterotrophs.
protozoans are able to move place to place to get food.
what are some characteristics of fungi-like protists?
able to move.
heterotroph.
have cell wall.
how do fungi-like protists reproduce?
they use spores.
what are the characteristics of plant-like protists?
autotroph
commonly called algue.
most oxygen in earth is made from algue on the surface of water.
unicellular and multicellular.
how do plant-like protists get their food?
photosynthesis
what is the cell wall of fungi made of?
chitin
what are the characteristics that all fungi share?
all are eukaryotes
use spores to reproduce.
heterotrophs
need moist places to grow
define hyphae.
branching, thread like tubes that make up multicellular fungi.
what are the different ways Hyphae can grow?
it can grow in fuzzy mold and be intangled in the stalk of a mushroom.
how does fungi get it’s food?
digestive chemicles ooz from the hyphae into the food then the chemicals break down the food into small substances that can be absorbed by the hyphae.
what are the 2 different ways fungi can reproduce?
Asexual reproduction and budding
define budding.
no spores are produced, but small yeast cells grow from the parent cell.
