Protista Flashcards
What is a protista?
A Unicellular organism which have similar animal/plant and fungal characteristics.
- Eukaryotic
- No Tissue
- Multicellular or unicelluar
Most are similar to bacteria. Why is this?
- Mostly unicellular
- Microscopic
- Can cause disease
- Can also be parasites
How can they differ from bacteria?
- Have a nuclei
- Live in water
- Generally live as one cell on there own (bacteria make colonies)
- Vary in appearance and function
What are the three groups of Protista?
- Animal - like
- Plant - like
- Fungi - like
What are the characteristics of animal like protista?
- Called protozoans
- Unicellular
- Require water to live in
- Most are hetertrophs
- Some can photosynthesis and have a vacuole (making them like plants)
- Most live independently
- Capable of movement
How do Protists reproduce?
Asexually - Binary Fission - rapid reproduction
Sexually - gametes - conjugation - varies combinations
How did Protozoa used to be classified?
By there movement method
What where the 4 groups of Protozoan’s?
- Cilates - use hairs to move
- Flagellates - Use flagella whip like tails
- Amoebas - Used pseudopodia
- Sparozoans - Have no movement
Give an example of a Ciliate?
Paramecium
Give an example of a Flagellate?
African Sleeping Sickness
Give some characteristics of a Paramecium?
- Swims
- Has a large vacuole
- Sweeps food into mouth and excretes waste
- Unicellular
- Has a definite shape
- Reproduces via conjugation
Give some characteristics of an Amoebae?
- Split into to groups - one have a shell the other does not
- Move by pseudopods (false feet)
- Has no definate shape
- Eats via phagocytes
Give some characteristics of Flagellates?
- Smallest protists
- Lives in fresh water
- One or more flagella
- Live by Symbiosis or mutualitisum
What diseases can be caused by Protists?
- Sleeping sickness
- Malaria
- Dysentery
