Q

How did mitochondria appear in Eukaryotes? How is the theory called?

A

Endosymbiosis theory states that larger organisms engulfed cells that later became a part of the main cell. One provides nutrients for another, while another produces energy for the first one.

Q

What are characteristics of plant-like Protist? Example?

A

It does photosynthesis (autotroph), but doesn’t have vascular tissue. Example is green algae, diatoms, euglena.

Q

What are characteristics of fungi-like Protist? Example?

A

They’re heterotrophs, but unlike fungi, fungi-like Protists don’t have a cell wall made of chitin. They’re parasitic. Example will be a slime mould.

Q

What are characteristics of animal-like Protist? Example?

A

They are heterotrophs, can be parasitic, and move using pseudopods, cillia, or flagella. Examples are amoebas and plasmodium.

Q

How do we know that some organelles (e.g mitochondria and chloroplas) were engulfed cells?

A

They do binary fission, have similar to prokaryotes cell wall, and have their own DNA.
