Karyotype/Chromosomes/Meiosis Flashcards

1
Q

What does karyotype tell you?

Q

What is a chromatin? When can you see it?

A

Chromatin is cell’s DNA that is not yet condensed into chromosomes. You can see it in interphase inside the nucleous.

Q

What do “2n” and “n” stand for?

A

It’s a notation used to describe if cell has/doesn’t a full set of chromosomes. “2n” means complete set (46) in the somatic cell. “n” means half of all chromosomes (23) in the gamete cells.

Q

When and where can you find diploid double cells?

A

Those are cells that undergo mitosis or meiosis 1 and when their DNA is replicated.

Q

When do you see haploid double cells?

A

They occur after meiosis 1 and where cells have 2 dad version of the chromosome but crossed over and therefore changed. Because those are chromosomes from the same parent, it’s considered half of the full set. That’s why it’s a haploid
