Bacteria/Archea Flashcards
Is bacteria Prokaryote or Eukaryote?
Procaryote
How is bacterial DNA is called?
Nucleiod
What is pillus and what does it do?
It’s a short hair on the bacteria that helps it move. It also helps with Conjugation.
What is Conjugation?
When two bacteria exchange DNA with each other by using pillus.
What does name ending with -Coccus mean?
The bacteria is round
What does name ending with -Bacillus mean?
The bacteria is rod-shaped.
What does name ending with -Spirillum mean?
The bacteria is spiral-shaped
What does the name beggining with Staphylo- mean?
The bacterial is in the groups.
What does the name beggining with Diplo- mean?
The bacteria is in pairs of two.
What does the name beggining with Strepto- mean?
The bacteria is arranged in a line.
Is bacterial autotroph or heterotroph?
It can be both.
What is the process of cell division into its clones called?
Binary fission
What is an endospore?
It’s a state of the bacteria in which it conserves energy and becomes inactive.
What is the difference between Bacteria and Archaea?
In Bacteria cell wall is made of Peptidoglycan and in Archaea the cell wall isn’t from peptidoglycan. Archea is an extremophile.
How else is Archaea called? What are 3 classifications?
Extremophiles (thermophiles, halophiles, and anaerobic).
What is Gram stain?
It’s a stain that determines if the bacterial’s peptidoglycan layer is thick or thin.
What does Gram Positive bacteria mean? What color is it?
It has a thick layer of peptidoglycan. It’s purple color.
What does Gram Negative bacteria mean? What color is it?
It has a thin layer of peptidoglycan. It’s pink color.
Is Archaea Prokariotic or Eukariotic?
Prokaryotic
