Protist & Fungi Flashcards
What is a protist?
eukaryotes
mostly unicellular
nucleus
move in moist enviornment
Types of protists
animal
plant
fungus
Animal-like protists
heterotrophs
classified off of movement
Animal-like protists ex.
protozoans w/ pseudopod, cilia, flagella, parasites
Amoeba
move off false foot
live in water
cell membrane bulges out
contractile vacoule
sticks and drags
pseudopod
Paramecium
2 nucleii
contractile vacuole
binary fussion
cilia
Giardia
mutalsim
flagella
Parasites
follow host’s cell
have to be inside something
Plant-like protists
autotrophs
unicellular or multicellular
form colonies
Plant-like protists ex.
diatoms
dinoflagellates
euglenoids
red algea
green algea
brown algea
Diatoms
have cell walls
unicellular
ex. toothpaste
Dinoflagellates
thick plates
unicellular
2 flagellium
Euglenoids
unicellular
autotrophs or hetertrophs
Red algea
multicellular
red pigment is good at absorbing the tiny bit of light
stuff extracted from the algea is used in ice cream and conditioner
Green algea
mostly unicellular
some form colonies
Brown algea
have gas-filled sacs “bladders” cause them to float
Fungus-like protists
hetertrophs
have cell walls
use spores reproduce
Fungus-like protists ex.
slime-mold
water-mold
downy mildew
Slime-mold
feed off of bacteria and other microorganisms
become multicellular later
release spores when close to death
Water-molds and downy mildews
look like fuzz
damage crops
potato famine
What are fungi?
eukaryotes
have cell walls
hetertrophs
use spores, budding, and hyphae to reproduce
Cell structure
most are multicellular fungi besides yeast - unicellular
the cells are arranged in structures called hyphae
spores in gills
Obtaining Food
heterotrophs - 1. hyphae grows into the food source 2. digestive chemicals ooze into food 3. chemicals break down the food into small substances that can be absorbed into the hyphae
Reproduction
asexual reproduction - fruiting bodies or reproducing spores
yeast does budding
sexual reproduction - the hyphae of 2 fungi exchange genetic material
Roles of fungi in nature
environmental recycling - decomposers
food - yeast, mushrooms, blue cheese
disease-fighting - penicillin
disease-causing - athlete’s foot, yeast infection, ringworm
Fungus-Plant Root Association
lichen - fungus + algea / fungus + bacteria
