Protestantism and Providentialism Flashcards
What was the confessionalisation thesis?
The confessionalisation thesis is the production of confessions of faith (e.g. of Ausburg), that the prince could choose what his people follow
What was the nature of post-Reformation England?
Post-Reformation England was a confessional state because there was an imposed (and indeed, increasingly enforced) state religion
What are the two broad aspects noted in the impact of the Elizabethan Religious Settlement
The Elizabethan religious settlement was perceived to be too accommodating of all sides- and indeed might’ve been considering no-one acted satisfied, but it did enforce elect .v. reprobate doctrine
What was a dissimilarity between English Reform Churches and Continental Reform Churches
The English Reform Church compromised on aspects of physical worship- such as whitewashing walls- which were more absolute on the continent
What was an issue with the not-radical practices established by the Elizabethan religious settlement?
Non-radical practises established such as vestments dating from 0000, avoiding Edwards heavily Calvinist reforms, caused the 1570s Vestments Controversy
What is a difficulty for both contemporaries and historians with regard to understanding reforms?
It is difficult to disentangle Catholic practise from English tradition in studies of religious and social practise - especially because some catholicism remained, hence interpretations of ‘half-reform’
How did Catholic Elizabeths change throughout Elizabeth’s reign?
Over time, Catholic non-attendance hardened. While pre-1580s there was Church Papistry of peaceful disruption (e.g. shouting over preachers), there wasn’t non attendance until the 1580s
What is a point of historiographic contention with regard to catholic non conformity?
There are questions in historiography of whether non conformity drove Elizabeth’s hardening of conformity policies or vice-versa
What did W. Shiels claim about the nature of conformity and dissent at a local level?
W. Shiels suggests that largely, getting on and along in day-to-day society was easier than constant clashing on all social levels, and that this became easier with the external threat of the Armarda
What does J. Malby contribute to ideas of Elizabethan Protestantism?
J. Malby suggests that key Book of Common Prayer phrases permeated everyday lexicons- shown how Protestantism was becoming Anglicism
What was the function of the Book of Martyrs (1563) in legitimising English Protestantism?
The Book of Martyrs (1563) provides the Reformed religion with providence and thus legitimacy, rather than Catholic criticisms of it being a Lutheran upstart
What is a contemporary source for martyrdom?
A contemporary source for martyrdom is St Augustin, he suggested that it was the cause rather than manner of death- hence why wars were coagulated
What was the interrelation of gender and Protestantism in Elizabethan England?
In Elizabethan England femininity was protestantised- e.g. Actes and Monuments stressed the Godly Damsels who died for the cause, Elizabeth was the Virgin Queen, Deborah etc
