Proteins Synthesis & Enzymes Flashcards
What are the roles of genes?
Genes contain the code for the production of proteins and dictates the order and number of amino acids
Where are genes housed?
in DNA molecules
What is a gene?
A section of the DNA strand that contains hereditary material and codes for specific proteins
Describe how DNA is constructed and packaged
- The DNA double helix is wrapped around histone proteins creating a nucleosome
- Nucleosomes are linked together to form chromatin
- Chromatin groups form chromatin fibres
What is the function of mRNA?
It copies the DNA gene in the form of mRNA which is able to leave the nucleus
Explain the process of transcription
Rough endoplasmic reticulum guides mRNA copy from nucleus to a ribosome
Ribosomes will read the mRNA copy and place amino acids carried on tRNA in correct sequence
This builds the polypeptide (protein) chain
Define the transcription process
- DNA uncoils and histones detach
- Copy of DNA is made
- It is also called gene activation/expression
What roles does RNA polymerase have?
- It binds to the start (promoter) region of gene
- It ‘reads’ the bases on the template strand of DNA
- Adds complimentary bases from nucleoplasm to form mRNA chain
What ends transcription?
When the RNA polymerase reaches the ‘stop’ signal
Define codon
- Sequence of three bases on mRNA
- Each codon specifies a particular amino acid
What percentage of mRNA ever reaches the cytoplasm?
5%
Define the translation process
Process of making a polypeptide chain from mRNA
Define enzymes
Catalysts that accelerate biological reactions
