Proteins, fats and carbohydrates Flashcards
1
Q
3 reasons our body needs protein
A
Growth
Repair
Maintenance
2
Q
Name four alternative protein sources
A
Soya
Tofu
Mycoprotein
TVP
3
Q
What are high and low biological proteins
A
High = all essential amino acids (animal sources) Low = one or more amino acids missing so you combine two or more together ( protein complementation)
4
Q
A deficiency and excess of protein
A
Excess = strain on liver and kidneys Deficiency = kwashiorkor (build up of fluid around the stomach)
5
Q
3 reasons our body needs fat
A
Insulation
Protection
Source of vitamins A, D, E and K
6
Q
The difference between saturated and unsaturated fats
A
Saturated = unhealthy, solid at room temp, animal sources Unsaturated = healthier, soft or liquid at room temp, vegetable sources
7
Q
What happens with excess and deficiency of fats
A
Excess= weight gain, increased blood cholesterol ( build up in blood vessels increased risk of high blood pressure and stroke) Deficiency = vitamin deficiency, weight loss (lack of energy ), less insulation and protection
8
Q
Name a mono, di and poly saccharide
A
Mono = glucose/ fructose Di = sucrose Poly = starch ( complex carbohydrate)
