Proteins and enzymes 2 (2) Flashcards
Primary structure
Primary structure is the unique sequence of amino acids that make up a protein
Secondary structure
Secondary structure is when H bonds form in poly peptide chains and twists it into an alpha helix shape or a beta pleated sheet
Tertiary structure
Tertiary structure is when coiled shape of protein coils further and disulphides, ionic and hydrogen bonds form between R groups. Also, hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions take place which is when hydrophilic R groups fold to inside and hydrophobic R groups fold to their outside.
Quaternary structure
Quaternary structure is the way many different polypeptide chains are held together
How can primary structure enable a protein to be soluble in water
Primary structure can enable a protein to be soluble in water by:
Primary structure determines folding of polypeptide
Forming a globular structure
Hydrophilic R groups located on outside
Water forms H bonds with hydrophilic R groups
