Proteins Flashcards
How do amino acids bond?
By condensation reaction
What bond from a between amino acids?
Peptide bond
What does the Primary structure of a protein consist of?
Sequence of amino acids in polypeptide chain (peptide bonds only)
What does the Secondary structure of a protein consist of?
Hydrogen bonds - creating an Alpha Helix or Beta pleated sheet
What does the Tertiary structure of a protein consist of? (Between R groups (4))
- Hydrogen Bonds
- Ionic bonds - between + and - r groups
- Disulphide bridge - between cysteine, containing sulphur
- Hydrophobic interaction - hydrophobic r groups fold up molecule
What structure does a tertiary structure give a protein?
Specific 3D structure, creating a globular protein
What does the Quaternary structure of a protein consist of?
When more than one polypeptide is involved in the structure (held by H bonds)
What are two examples of quaternary structure?
Haemoglobin - 4 polypeptides; 2 alpha 2 beta
Collagen - fibrous protein made of 3 interwoven polypeptide (no tertiary 3D structure) with staggered ends
What is the monomer/polymer of proteins?
Polymer - polypeptide
Monomer - amino acids
