Lipids Flashcards
What is a triglyceride made of?
Glycerol (alcohol)
3 fatty acids (hydrocarbons)
What reaction joins glycerol and fatty acids together?
Condensation reaction
What bond is formed between glycerol and a fatty acid?
Ester bond
What’s the ‘basic unit’ of lipids?
Triglyceride
Do lipids contain more/less oxygen than hydrogen atoms?
Less oxygen atoms, more hydrogen atoms
What are the hydrogen atoms in lipids involved in? What does it produce?
Aerobic respiration, producing ATP
What are the two types of fatty acids? Give an example of each
Saturated - animal fats
Unsaturated - oil
What bonds do saturated/unsaturated fats contain? What do they do to the molecule?
Saturated - single bonds, meaning it has the max no. of H atoms
Unsaturated - double bonds, reducing the amount of H atoms and produces a bend giving it a low melting point
Why do we need lipids? (5)
Secondary energy reserve Insulation Protection of delicate organs Buoyancy Call membrane
