Proteins Flashcards
Proteins can be both soluble and insoluble. Give an example of both.
Soluble: blood plasma proteins
Insoluble: collagen
Why are proteins important
the cell communicates via protein interactions, binding sites, and signaling molecules. Adhering specific proteins to the surface of a material can induce a specific behavior from a protein.
Vroman Effect
proteins that have higher mobility will adhere to a surface first, due to diffusion principles and kinetics, however, later, proteins with a higher affinity to the surface will displace other proteins. (thermodynamic)
Adsorption Isotherm
there are roughly two phases, a rapid diffusion controlled stage, followed by a second slower surface controlled phase.
RGD
a protein that Arg-Gly-Asp that interacts with fibronectin for integrin binding to the ECM.
