Proteins Flashcards
What is a disadvantage of proteins?
-may malfunction and result in disease,
Example;
Insulin hormone, caused diabetes
How are protein based diseases corrected?
Corrected with protein based therapies, by replacing insulin
Name 5 amino acid groups;
1)special
2)polar/non polar
3)charged/non charged
4)acids/bases
5)hydrologic/hydrophilic
What is an amino acid?
An organic compound, contains a central carbon attached to a hydrogen, carboxyl and amino groups, as well as a side chain which is specific to each amino acid
What do one or more peptides form?
A polypeptide
Outline the main features of non-covalent bonding: (3)
-not electron share between atoms of a covalent bond
-a reaction is not involved to form the bond
-it is an interaction between atoms
Name 4 types of non-covalent bonding:
(1)dipole-dipole interaction
(2)hydrogen bonding
(3)van der waals
(4)hydrophobicity
Describe dipole-dipole interaction
Polar molecules can interact via permanent dipole-dipole interactions
Describe hydrogen bonding
Polar molecules can interact via permanent dipole-dipole interactions
Describe van der waals interactions
-polar
-non-polar -> even electron share
-> temporarily dipole
Describe hydrophobocity
-polar side chains are hydrophilic (they like water)
-non-polar side chains are hydrophobic - don’t like water
