Proteins Flashcards

Q

What role do chaperones play in translation? What would happen without them?

A

Chaperones attach to proteins as they are being translated to prevent premature folding. They help move them to the chaperonin which has a double barrel like structure that isolates it from the cytosol and allows proper protein folding.

W/o this, you likely get frequent misfolded proteins that are either degraded or form aggregates causing tissue damage/disease. This shortage of function protein can become a problem quickly leading to cell death.
