Infection and Immunity Flashcards
What are biofilms? What allows them to form?
Aggregate of MO’s adhering to each other on living/non living surfaces in the body. The production of EPS (exopolysaccharides) enables growth/protection as it make ALGINATE which inhibits the innate immune system
What are the 4 degradative enzymes?
-Lecithinase, phospholipidase, hemolysin, leukocidin/streptolysin
What does lecithinase do?
destroys lecithin/phosphatidylcholine
What does phospholipase do?
Breaks down phospholipids
What does leukocidin/streptolysin do?
lyse phagocytes and their granules
What do hemolysins do?
Lyse erythrocytes
What are the spreading factors? (for bacteria)
-Hyaluronidase, Collagenase, Streptokinase/staphylokinase, Neuraminidase
What does hyaluronidase do?
cleaves hyaluronic acid= component of extracellular matrix=tissue penetration
What does collagenase do?
-breaks down collagen in CT
What does streptokinase/staphylokinase do?
convert plasminogen to fibrin= promoting digesting of clots= help bacteria spread
What does streptokinase/staphylokinase do?
