Protein Flashcards
What is protein made up of?
Amino acids
What are the two types of amino acids?
Dispensable
Indispensable
What are dispensable amino acids?
They are non essential as they are produced in the body. They are not needed in the diet.
What are indispensable amino acids?
Essential Amino acids that can’t be made in the body. They are needed through the diet.
What are high biological value proteins?
Proteins that contain all the indispensable amino acids.
What are low biological value proteins?
Proteins which contain some but not all of the indispensable amino acids.
Give three examples of HBV in proteins:
Meat
Fish
Eggs
Milk
Cheese
Give three examples of LBV proteins:
Oats
Rice
Barley
Maize
Pulse vegetables
What is protein complementation?
LBV proteins lack one or more of the indispensable anima acids. This is called the limiting Alina acids. When two LBV protein foods are eaten together in the same meal, the Alina acids in the food will compensate for the limiting amino acid in the other, resulting in an HBV protein.
Give the functions of protein:
Are the basis of body structures such as muscle and hair.
To facilitate growth
Help to repair body tissues
Produce enzymes for digestion
Produce hormones
A secondary source of energy
Name the disease that results from a protein deficiency:
Kwashiorkor
Give the symptoms of kwashiorkor:
Swollen belly
Pale skin
Stunted growth
Fatigue
Edema
What are the alternatives to protein?
Tofu
Micro protein
