What are the two main types of carbohydrates?
Sugar and starch
Describe sugar carbohydrates:
Known as simple carbohydrates
They are absorbed quickly
Raise blood sugar levels
Great for an instant boost of energy
Describe starch carbohydrates:
Known as Complex carbohydrates
Take longer to digest and absorb
Keep blood sugar levels constant
Slow release energy
State the functions of carbohydrates:
Providing energy (1g = 3.75 kcals)
Energy store
Protein sparer
Providing Fibre
Give some examples of starchy carbohydrates:
Bread
Pasta
Rice
Potatoes
Cereals
Porridge
Give some examples of sugary carbohydrates:
Biscuits
Buns
Cakes
Jam
Chocolate
Soft drinks
What are the advantages of starchy foods?
They keep blood sugars constant
Provide other nutrients
They are filling so reduce snacking
They lesser the risk of tooth decay
Give the two types of sugar:
Intrinsic
Extrinsic/ free sugars
What are intrinsic sugars?
Those contained in structure of foods. They are found naturally in fruit and vegetables - have no effect on health.
What are extrinsic sugars?
Sugars added to food or sugars in honey, syrup or unsweetened fruit juices.
How can we reduce tooth decay?
Brushing our teeth twice a day
Regular dentist check ups
Avoiding snacking
Reducing the amount of sugary food we consume
Reducing the amount of sugary drinks we consume
Drink water as it contains fluoride
How much of our diet should come from carbohydrates?
50% - 45% starch & 5% sugar
