Prosthetics Flashcards
What is a prosthetic?
a fabricated substitute for a diseased or missing body part
What is the title for someone who designs, fabricates, and fits prosthetic limbs?
A Prosthetist
Name some types of Lower Extremity Prostheses
Partial Foot: Syme's: for below the ankle amputation, replaces whole foot Transtibial Transfemoral Knee disarticulation Hip disarticulation
What are the components of a Trans-tibial prosthesis?
Shank: substitute for leg, between foot and socket –exoskeleton made to look like a real leg
Foot-ankle assembly: non-articulated = no space between foot and lower portion of shank
articulated = separate foot and lower shank
What does a prosthesis need to stay on the patient?
Socket: plastic receptacle for the amputated limb
Suspension: required to hold prosthesis in place when there’s no pressure pushing it onto the limb (while walking, going up stairs, jumping, etc)
What are the different methods of prostheses suspension?
Patient wears a silicone liner with a metal pin attached that locks into the prosthesis
Cuff suspension buckles onto the upper portion of the limb
Thigh corset
Vacuum assisted
Brim variations
A trans-femoral prosthesis may require suction to stay on: explain the three variations
Total Suction: no auxiliary suspension, gives max control of prosthesis, fit must be VERY snug
Partial Suction: looser fit so auxiliary suspension is needed, pt must wear socks or a liner
No suction: loose fit, pelvic band/ suspension sleeve provides suspension, may use osse-integration
